I HAVE A 2001 F250 SUPERDUTY CREW CAB. 30000 MILES, RECENTLY HAD IT TO DEALER FOR SERVICE, CHANGED FULE FILTER, TRANSMISSION FLUID ETC. NOW WVERY MORGNING WHEN I START IT , IT TAKES ABOUT 10 SECONDS OF CRANKING BEFORE IT WILL START, THEN IT ACTS LIKE ITS MISSING REALLY BAD, OR ONLY RUNNING ON HALF THE CYLINDERS, AFTER ABOUT 10 SECONDS IT WILL DIE, AND I HAVE TO RESTART IT, IT WILL DOE THE SAME THING AND I WILL RESTART IT AGAIN, NOW IT WILL RUN FOR A WHILE AND THEN AFTER A ABOUT TWO MINUTES OF THIS IT WILL SMOOTH OUT AND SOUNDS LIKE IT IS RUNNING FINE, I SHIFT INTO DRIVE AND HAVE NO POWER, TUCK WONT MOVE, AND ENGINE WILL NOT RESPOND TO ACCELLORATOR. AFTER ABOUT ANOTHER MINUTE IT WILL FINALLY TAKE OFF. DEALOR CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT, ANY BODY GOT ANY IDEAS. SJE
How cold is it where you live? Plug the truck in so that the engine coolant is warm when you start it. You could also be suffering from winter diesel fuel. I use Standyne lubricity formula and my truck runs much better on the winter blend. The lack of power you describe at start could be the exhaust backpressure valve. Your truck should not stall, but you shouldn't have full power until the exhaust backpressure valve shuts off when the truck is sufficiently warm.
Sounds like a text book case of air in the fuel lines/pump. Diesels use a high pressure fuel system, if air became trapped in the fuel system during the filter change the pump is 1)unable to get sufficient fuel, and 2) unable to raise the fuel to the pressure necessary for combustion. Unfortunately, simply allowing the truck to run won't cure the problem as most pumps are unable to self prime themselves, they just continue to cavitate. Your situation is basically the same as running your diesel out of fuel. The system has to be bled or placed under pressure (before the pump). This generally isn't something you can do yourself, it takes a trip to the dealer or diesel shop, aka you need a tow. I'd take it right back to the place that did the maintenance and tell them to do it right this time.
THATS WHAT I KIND OF THOUGHT THAT IT HAD AIR IN THE LINES OR WAS SUCKING AIR SOME PLACE. BUT ONCE IT GETS STARTED ITS OKAY TILL THE NEXT MORN. I LIVE IN NEBRASKA IT GETS COLD HERE BUT ITS BEEN ONLY DOING THIS SINCE I HAD IT SERVICED A WEEK AGO. DONT NEED A TOW, I CAN DRIVE IT ONCE I GET STARTED IN THE MORN. BUT IT WONT ACT UP UNLESS IT SETS AT THE DEALERS OVERNITE. SJE 2001 CREWCAB, POWERSTROKE DIESEL, AUTO, CAMPER PACKAGE, AND ALL THE OTHER GOODIES
It may have leak in the system, allows it to draw air in around the fuel filter or elsewhere behind the pump due to the vacuum created. Or alternatively, and more likely, the leak is allowing fuel all pressure to bleed off and the fuel to drain back, drawing in air ahead of the pump or at some poin in the system.
That's about all I can think of. Post this in the diesel forum, if The Diesel Dude doesn't come around, flag him down. He knows these PSD's inside out and is always very helpful. He should be able to get you on your way.
