Remote Starter Help

Anyone know how to troubleshoot a Ford Gold remote start system. I installed the unit myself and all the features work except the remote start. When I push the start button I get a light flash and nothing else. If I hold the button I get 4 horn beeps.

I did go through the set up and programmed the transmitter and also programmed the PATS unit using two factory keys.

I can get the security system to do everything it's upposed to do but I can't get the starter to work.

Any help would be great!!!

check your igniting wires from the starter unit to the connection/splice point

Good point.

As part of the install you have to cut the ingnition wire and wire one end to two different wires on the remote unit. The car starts with the key so the connections should be good. Do you think there may be a reason why it'll start with the key but not with the remote?

Theres ussually a tach sensing wire check that, if thats not right the remote start will not work but everything else will, these are tough, even the guys at my local stereo shop had problems with the reomote start part of it b/c of the tach sensing wire, and they do these things all day long, if one thing is messed up in the remote start part of the sysem it will auto not let it work after you check all that you must re-program the sysem, to see if it works and for it to reset

Kevin,

I'm not sure about you, but I was the cause of the problems I was having. In the instructions there a 5 steps you have to go through to program the unit. I'm not 100% sure about 1-3 but 4 is programing the tach read feature and 5 is programing the PATS. I skipped #4 and said "I'll just do it later". I did go throught step #5 on my first attempt. Well evidently the unit knows the programing order and if you skip a step the other steps are ignored. So I had to go to the tach programing phase, I think it was in bank #5 and it takes about 30 seconds to do. Then I had to redo the PATS programing and bingo I was in business. In the end I spent two days trying to figure it out until the 800 help line pointed me in the rigt direction. it took abotu 2 mins. to finish the setup and get the unit working. Hope this helps. Al

I have been out of town. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I have tried the set up several times and am having no luck. I am sure I am doing something wrong, the instructions were tough to follow. I bought mine on e-bay and am very concerned it doesn't work properly, however it looked new. I will try calling the help line tommorrow. Are you still glad you installed it?

Another quick question. When you hooked up your tach wire did you go to the wire off of your number one injector or did you go to the wiring harness below? I went for the wire in the harness and found the color wire the directions called for. I got the readings on my meter like it said, but I am not sure if this is right any help will be appreciated.
Thanks Kevin.

What kind of wire splices did you use? When i put mine in the splice connectors were rated for like 14-16 and i the ign power wires for the ignion were about 12 ga which was too thick for them to work. I'd unplug the wire harness from the start module, then check the power wire with a multimeter. Thats exactly what my problem was, and the symptoms were as you described, everything worked, lights flashed, but no start. Also listen to hear if your fuel pump is kicking in, because if its a power problem the fuel pump wouldnt kick in, but if you hear your pump kicking in then you know your power wires are good, narrowing it down to your starter wire. make sure you tap into the wires on the right side of the ignition switch also, otherwise you will run into problems. You'll love the remote start, fun freaking people out when they hear your truck rev up but there's no one inside

Kevin,

I'm not 100% sure what wire the tach is hooked to. See I got my dad to help me hook up the system and he did all the wiring under the hood. Here's what I know. He hooked the tach wire to a wire that matched the colors on the chart. The wire is in a plug that plugs into the rear of the what I think is a coil pack. Basically it's a bundle where the plug wires meet. It's on the top front of the engine and the plug comes in from the back and the wires are snaked under the plastic cover over the intake. In the programming did you get the horn beeps while you programmed the unit for the tach. The horn is supposed to beep once every 3 secs if it reads the tach signal properly. What instructions did your unit coem with? I amy be able to fax you a copy of mine. There's about 100 pages so I would just be sending the programming sheets.

I got with Ford tech help today and I have everything hooked up Ok. The unit read the tach, but would not start the vehicle. We determined that my module is bad. They are faxing me a claim form. Thanks for all your help.
