I have the drive shaft off to replace the transmission output shaft seal. I have Spicer u-joints in hand. I replaced the u-joints in the ‘93 E-150 or the ‘97 C2500 Suburban. Those u-joints clicked. These u-joints aren’t clicking. Each existing u-joint has a stiffer axis that holds the yoke in any position and a floppy axis. Otherwise, no play or rough spots. The existing u-joints aren’t greasable. Replace?
I'm not quite clear how this "clicking" you describe applies to a u-joint soundness for continued use but I've used the Spicer non-greaseable parts without any issues in over 100K miles. They are said to be stronger than the greaseable versions, I wouldn't hesitate to use that brand and type again.
Use either ones you want
The hole for the zerk makes the star weaker
So, for drag racing you install the zerk under compression, that makes the star is stronger
They do say that the non-greaseable ones are stronger and I see them lasting just as long as the greaseable type
I have factory non greaseable ones in my 69 Boss 302, still there, still good
Thanks! I meant the last time I replaced u-joints which was in another vehicle the old ones felt like they had detents. The ones in this van move smoothly but looser in one axis than the other.
I don’t know how long these u-joints have been in service. We’ve had the van for 30K miles.
No reason to suspect they are no good
Listen for the tell tell sign of squeaking when going slow, and feel for any "seat of the pants" vibration
You know how to check them right?
Jacked up in neutral, rotate the driveline around check for looseness and any up and down or side to side movement of the star
Check for the rear axle pinion yoke being loose etc
Wondering tabijan, do you post on the Benz world site?
There’s no play that I can attribute to u-joints. No new noises. Theres a bit of a clunk going into gear and new vibration through the seat above 40mph. The van sits for months at a time so it might be flat spots on the tires
Yup, I’m on BW W211 forum. I used to be active in Peach Parts Diesel forum but I haven’t had a Diesel in many years.
+1 for the flat spots if you see nothing wrong with the driveline (or yokes)
Used to see the pinion yokes get loose
And that yoke flopping around caused a vibration
