239 Flathead Head Bolt Torque

I am replacing the head gaskets on my 1953 239 flathead. The manual shows the correct sequence for torquing the bolts. Is it recommended to immediately torque the head bolts to 65-70 lb-ft, or should you first torque the bolts to a lower level before repeating the procedure to the final torque?

I was taught to torque in steps. I always start with about 40-45 then 50-55, then finish with the required spec.

I also check it again after it's been at working temperature a couple of times, then again at about 100 miles.

This is the way I was taught, your mileage and research may vary.

Sneaking up on the final torque in stages allows the clamping force to come down more evenly and reduce the chance of warping things. The block deck on a flat motor is pretty thin and can use all the help to stay straight it can get.
