My son has a 1986 Ford Econoline with an AOD transmission behind a 302. The transmission has failed. My questions are, are there any Ford engines with the same rear bolt pattern as the 302, and would an AOD from the right engine in a car or an F series fit this van? Also, if an F series transmission would work but it is a 4WD, is it as simple as removing and interchanging the extension housings and output shafts?
Thanks
The AOD was only built with the Windsor family trans bolt pattern so any one you find could work but the trans got updates as the years went by and was built better for heavier vehicles so an early to mid '90's truck would be the best donor, just make sure you get the mechanical version not the computer controlled(AODE/4R70w) which looks very similar.
Converting a 4wd version to 2wd requires complete disassembly to change the output shaft so if the only option you find is from a 4wd truck just leave the t-case attached and grab the shorter driveshaft while you're in there.
Thanks for the information! My son just pulled one out of a salvage yard today. He didn't know about the AODE/4R70w. Now we'll have to check to see what he got.
