Recently my A/C hasn't been engaging, so I did some diagnostics this morning with the help of Scotty Kilmer & FordTechMakuloco, and here's what I discovered. I have pressure in the system; about 70psi on the low side, 75 psi on the high side with the engine running and A/C turned on. I ran a key on, engine off test, and the test passed, but I couldn't feel the clutch engaging at all while the test was running. Also, looking at the engine running with the A/C on and off, I don't see any difference in the clutch plate; it's not coming on.
My conclusion is that the clutch is shot. I think I'd just replace the whole compressor, as the truck is a 98 with the 4.6, and it's not much more expensive to do the whole thing compared to just the clutch.
My question is, should I go OEM or aftermarket, and is there anything besides the compressor I need to replace? I was seeing some people online saying that everything in the system needs to be replaced at once...
I'd suggest going over the stuff in the HVAC FAQs as they offer insights towards a CORRECT diagnosis. Link is in my signature.
People like you are why I love this site! I checked my air gap, and it didn’t seem excessively large, but I figured I try removing a clutch spacer. I could feel some magnetism when the A/C was turned on but not engaging.
I only had one spacer, and with it removed the clutch dragged even when disengaged, so I used some aluminum siding stock to make a thinner washer, and now the A/C blows cold again.
I ended up going to AutoZone and getting a Santech shim pack, since the clutch wasn't seating right with my DIY shim. 5 .016" shims, and a bolt and retaining ring for $5.
