Hey yall, I’m coming to ask a question. I just recently replaced my power steering system (new lines, pump, gear and pitman arm) and now i’m stuck with the old gear and I cannot get the arm
off. I don’t own a puller but I do own a couple sets of pickle forks. But that’s besides the point.
I bought the gearbox, which is a remanned motocraft gearbox, from RockAuto, and I would like to send it back as a core ($150..), but I’m not quite sure if I can send it back with the arm still attached to the box. Has anyone ran into this issue or know if they will “void” my core?
I have never sent one back with the Pitman arm. You could rent a puller or take it to a local shop to see if they will separate them for you. I took mine to a shop once since the puller I had would not fit. I don’t remember what the shop charged me but it wasn’t much.
You can hit the pitman arm with a BIG hammer and it will come off
You might damage the gear housing or sector shaft if you miss, so be careful
I learned that way on Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks back when I started wrenching
Had some old boys laughing at me as I was over there working on it with a big jaw puller
One old boy showed me how it was done in 2 or 3 good smacks with a small sledgehammer
