i recently got a copy of the shop manuals for the 84 model year to match my truck. i was looking at the decoding section and realized my axle code isn't listed. my axle code is 16, which is both not on the list and doesn't make sense since it's 4x4 my understanding is that there should be another digit for the front axle. so my question is 2 fold. what gearing do i have and is my manual or the truck wrong?
My tin foil hat tells me they never had a 84 4x4 F350 truck and why they dont list 2 numbers.
OH what you dont have a F350?
You telling me my hat lies to me well I'll be who would guess
A little more information goes a long way
What month & year is listed on the door sticker or better yet post a picture of it so we see what you are seeing.
If it was built after sept. it is the next year model in most cases. I got a 12/80 F100 making it a 81 model year truck.
So you may be looking at the wrong year for the decoding.

My 4WD 86 F150 has an axle code of 19 (3.55 gears open diff). There is no code for the front since it must have the same gear ratio for the 4WD to work properly. Sorry, I can’t identify code 16. Are you sure that is the correct code?
Do you have a 9” or an 8.8” (cast iron pumpkin in front of the axle housing or a 10 bolt cover in the rear of the axle housing)? I saw something suggesting a 9” 3.50 open or a 8.8 3.73 open on some forum, but I cannot confirm the reliability of this info.

Apologies it is an 84 f150 according to the vin and it's built in February of 84

It's a 9 inch and I'm very certain it's a 16 i uploaded a photo of my vin plate on another reply
You know I dont see any weights or tires sizes either
Dose the transmission match the code on the sticker?
Dave ----
According to the code it's a c6. I'm not certain how to confirm that though. According to the vin it came with a 351w too but i pulled out a 302 so it's real confusing
Edit figured out the identification yes the transmission code is accurate
A easier way is to get a wheel off the ground, both if LS, turn the wheel 1 turn and count the number of times the drive shaft turns.
if you have 3.50 gears the drive shaft should turn 3 1/2 turns to 1 of the wheel.
A little more that 3 could be 3.08 or 3.25, little more than 4 could be 4.10 / 4.11 gears.
Just get a close count and look up on charts for a ratio that is close is good enough just to know what you got.

3.75M means it's a 3750lb rated axle which is what your tag says also. That is a lighter duty axle which your tag also confirms. Your VIN indicates this is a light duty f250
