It certainly appears to be a windsor engine , measuring the intake , an intake part number or distributer no may be the best chance at identifying it . That being said unless you have decided to pull the engine and redo it really won't make allot of difference other that a few parts that will differ between the two ( tune up parts such as plugs, wires, dist cap etc ) will be the same . If your only concern is power I would get it running , drive it and see what your engine is like .JMHO
I got a post that says it’s a 302, you say 351w. I’m trying to narrow it down. If I knew it was a mustang engine, I wouldn’t be asking for help on what this is.
I said I’m still learning. It was just towed to my house.
No one's upset, in fact we're really trying to help you. We've given you all the information you need to determine what you have and are waiting to have you confirm for us. The engine is sitting in front of you, we can't tell any more than we've said from here.
No one said it was a Mustang engine. In fact, based on what I see here, if it is indeed a 351 I will guarantee it is not a Mustang engine. Not that it much matters, except for a few high performance special editions, the same engines used in Mustangs were in Fairlanes, Torinos, LTD's, etc.
Ok, thank you,
When I get home from work ill check the dimensions of what you all suggested last night.
I know this engine went in many different types for fords. I was just using a mustang as a general concept it may have been in.
I'm not looking for crazy power mods, I just want to know what’s installed and if I need to replace anything what to search for.
It would be awesome if it was a 351w but I won’t be sad if it’s a 302. I love it the way it is. I hadn’t heard it start in about 20 years and I was too young to ask what was installed when I did. I just want to putt-around and be able to talk about the engine and other parts on it.
I'm looking over the engine now. Looks like the water pump to radiator is about a 45 degree angle, might call it 90 degree but the inlet the hose attached to is angled up. The intake manifold measures about 10" across bolt to bolt. The distributor is sitting lower compared to the Cleveland pictured above it sits a couple inches below the 2 barrel carb. With your help I would say Windsor. Now the displacement is unknown to me. In the morning I'm going to siphon the gas, check coolant, and plugs. Put some fresh gas in it and a little in the carb and hand crank it. If it goes well I'll try to turn it over. I checked the oil and it full and clean.

" Just don't know the displacement." What? Either the displacement is 351 ci, as you just said or it is not a 351W. Yes, it is a Windsor, no denying that but it could be 260, 289,302 (same deck height) or 351 (tall deck). What does it measure across the intake? I still say short deck based on your pictures.
Yeah, I'm confused about the confusion. As I said earlier, the easiest way to tell is by looking at the width of the intake. Measurements are above. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post21322733 There's only 2 options. OP says the bolts are 10" apart, yet is unsure if it's wide or narrow?
I looked over the engine again and the valve covers have 3 bolts on the outer sides and one on the opposite side total for both sides is 8. The wikiHow says 8 bolts is a 351. Can anyone confirm?
I see 6 bolts on each valve cover - 3 top and 3 bottom. The wiki reference you found that says a 351 has 8 is for a 351/400M. Completely different engine.
IF I counted right - for anyone interested:
FE 360/390/428 has 5 bolts on each valve cover
Windsor 302/351 has 6 bolts per valve cover
429/460 has 7 bolts on each valve cover
351M/400M has 8 on each valve cover as noted above
Ford lost the extra 4 four sometime in the 70's. I have a 78. It only has 12. Best to measure China wall or 2 fins behind distributor. Can you remove the bottom thermste bolt with a socket, it you can it is a 351W. No need to give up or be confused.
