My 2009 4.6l I think is finally encountering timing chain problems after 172k miles. We returned today from taking my daughter to college and while we were gone my three year old Mastercraft axt’s had one grow a golf ball sized bulge.
In addition it threw a P0016, repeatedly. I had though that perhaps it was because i fogged the UIM with carb cleaner before we left. IDK. But after new CP sensors it persists.
So the question is. What now? Part it out? Its a michigan truck so the cab and bed arent worth anything. But the interior, small stuff, is it even worth it?
I realize its highly respective and situational but for the next used F150, what are the safest years to go after? Is every year from 09 to 24 susceptible to the overly weak timing chain/guides nonsense?
Assuming nothing else is hurt, it isn't an awful job to repair. If you are looking for a reason to buy another truck, here's your chance. If you'd rather keep the money in the bank, fix it. I'll be replacing timing components on my 09 later this year, if all goes to plan.

I removed both CPS’s earlier today and poked my video scope up in there. Bank 1 is the complainer and I could see score marks weirdly only on every other tooth of the cam gear. Bank 2 looked nice and clean.
wtf would cause only every other tooth to get obvious wear?
