Straight pipe exhaust question

I'm looking at the Banks Turbo kit for my motorhome. I've heard a lot of you guys talking about straight pipes to lower EGTs and reduce backpressure. The question is, how loud is it? I'm a gearhead, so I love engine noise like the next guy, but this pipe will come out right behind the right rear wheel. Is it going to be too loud for the wife and kids to watch TV while we travel? Also, while I'm at it, How big should I make the pipe? Should I go with the stock banks diameter and just run no muffler?

They can get a little noisy, I always put in a straight thru resonator for a muffler.

back when i had my non-turbo, i had true duals put on with flowmaster mufflers. Boy was it loud OUTSIDE, but inside it really wasn't all that bad. Would be fine for the family, plus your kids would love the sound outside

At least 3" pipe 4" would be even better. I have an 86 6.9NA that had a stock 2" exhaust. I now have dual 3" straight stacks and it is LOUD. Truck runs so much better though. The turbo will smooth out most of the noise.

I have a 1987 6.9 N/A F250 with a muffler. It is loud. I rode with my cousin who has a p'stroke complete with turbo and 4" straight pipes. There is no comparison. His is quieter by a long shot than mine with a muffler.

How does it quiet them so much? Does the idi make a difference? I know one guy who has a F250 just like mine with an ATS turbo and it is almost as loud as mine. In fact he pulled the muffler off to make it louder but it still is a little quieter than mine.

The turbo tends to chop up the exhaust pulses.

I have built my truck over the years.
What I am driving now is nothing like the one I bought.

Well OK, the wheels, frame, cab, doors, most of the dash, steering column, grill, front bumper and fenders are still OEM.

Most of it's life my truck was an almost stock NA 6.9.

Just think Dave if you hadn't built it up like you want it it would be closer to the shore right now. Well was this thread your first post.

I can't remember for sure, but it was one of the earliest I can remember.

And I am still saying bigger pipes and a turbo chops up the sound pulses right well after all this time.

Coulda fooled me...or maybe it's the stacks that makes mine seem so loud.

I know that with just a muffler (even a 30" long Magnaflow), through the stacks, if you have the sliding rear window open, it'll about make your ears bleed if you're going uphill or giving it some throttle.
