I’m not sure John, but if I remember correctly, the socket that fits those bolts is a 3/8”. That would seem to make them sae instead of metric. Someone else will surely chime in. They are flange bolts, again, if I remember correctly.

I was going by what was on the bottom of the pix,
if it is wrong, that grocery store .... takes returns at no cost to me

probably should have waited until I get the truck out of the shop,
removed another bolt and check it for thread/pitch

M8x1.25 and 5/16”-18 UNC are close enough that they look the same but different enough that will mess the threads up if one is threaded into the other far enough. Do not mix them.

I am almost certain those are not metric bolts from the factory.

I will report back if the ones I ordered thread up all the way by hand, if they goes in two turns and get tight, then ????

Will have to clean out the dirt first...

Those bolts were the only bolts when I had my transmission rebuilt that metric wrench would not fit. They look like a 10mm head but I had to use a 3/8” socket on them.

This is true.

I have seen where a truck body builder installed 1/2-13 UNC bolts into OEM threaded receivers that were M14 metric. The wrong bolts will start easy enough by hand, because it takes about 4 threads before the cadence of the different thread pitches becomes out of sync, the resistance of which the installers do not feel with an impact driver.

I haven't physically checked, but based on the numerology of Ford's Standard Parts and Hardware catalog, I would have to agree that the bolts that hold the inspection cover plate in place are not metric, even though every other bolt on the transmission is metric.

The Ford part number for the four inspection plate bolts is 56719-S2. That this is a bolt that begins with the number 5, and only has 5 numbers before the suffix that identifies the coating, suggests to me that this is an SAE fractional dimensioned bolt, not a metric bolt.

There are 10 mounting holes surrounding the bell housing, which take 3 different types of bolts, 2 types of which are metric, and 1 type (that holds the inspection plate) that appears not to be.

The other two (metric) types of bolts are:
N808234-S426 (for the two holes at the very top of the bell housing)... and
N808235-S426 (for the remainder of the bell housing holes, except for the inspection plate cover)

Some random example online sources for the OEM inspection plate bolts:

Wow,
a super simple question, has turned into a School Lesson.

I will be very careful to test the SAE bolts that I bought, both by hand to see if they will go all the way by hand, then just use an End Wrench to snug them up.... before a Torque wrench is used.

did a search for just the bolt number, and the prices are all over the 'net.

https://zzdiesel.com/products/56719s...sing-bolt-ford
$28.95 for just one. best search all the prices, don't take the first one you see.
