MFer's indeed. But that's a nice temporary solution. The side mirrors aren't cheap - but I'm sure you know that by now. I've had to pass in some tight places and I'm always wincing alittle when there is another truck approaching. Never had this happen to me, but it's only a matter of time. I did have someone ding my door the other day and it doesn't bother me that much - it's just the principle of it, no note, nothing. Lots of sucky people out there today.
I came VERY close to killing someone on a sport bike this morning, in plain view of a cop too. Got it on video. Once I figure out how to take it from the dashcam and create a video share with it, I will post it on utub of what NOT to do when riding a bike.
heading in to work, cruse set at my normal 64 (62GPS) and in the left lane slowly working my way past two others doing 60, and in the right ditch facing traffic is the local CM pickup. As soon as I get past the nose of one car, the lights come on. No Way, I go by them every stinking day doing the same speed. What I didn't see was the idiot on the bike that the cop had actually gunned. I was just about to move right when this idiot flies past me down the center lane. I never saw the guy until he whipped by me. If I had moved right 2 seconds sooner, he would have been splatted on my tailgate. I think they eventually caught him, or he wiped out.
Im happy Ram did away with the moose ears on the newer models. I recently traded one of my Fords for a Ram and the mirrors don't stick out anymore than the Fords do when collapsed. Around here there is barely room enough on most roads for two 3/4 ton sized trucks to pass with the mirrors in the normal position never mind those jackasses that never collapse their mirrors when not towing. Then there are plenty of operators with mirrors hanging over the yellow line because they cant manage the size of their vehicle.
If I dont have enough room to ride the white line and stay a foot or more off the center line I just fold my mirror in for that road. Lost too many over the years on company trucks from both my drivers and the other drivers fault. Be lucky it didnt fold in from the impact and take out the drivers window. Had that happen more than once.
OP, you had your mirrors extended when the RAM mirror hit it???
If so, then it was not just the RAM with the issue?
The mirrors only look like they stick out more than on the Ford, because the RAM cab dimensions are slightly narrower from door exterior to door exterior than the Ford, so actually the total width with the mirrors extended is very close to the same.
I had a RAM before my current F250, and I always ran with the mirrors extended, because unlike the Ford, the RAM mirrors extend by turning the mirror head from horizontal to upright, so each time you extend them, all mirror angles have to be re-adjusted, unlike the Ford that simply slides out, allowing you to keep the same basic mirror angle settings. So, if you tow a lot, like I do, and many others do to, going from extended to retracted and back is a major operation on the RAM, so that is why so many leave them extended.
It's good to know that RAM changed the mirror design so that isn't the case anymore.

Curious when RAM did this as my neighbor bought a new one a few months ago and the mirrors don't look much different to me. Now maybe if it was sitting side by side of a new one I'd disagree. Maybe they're all just visually not appealing to me and that's why I've not noticed but if they've changed them it's not by much.

Yup, they definitely changed them, I just looked at the ramtrucks.com website and the new mirrors slide in and out now, different shape mirror head but they still have a single arm that the head mounts to.

I'm going to have to take a second look when I drive by his truck this evening now .

Not sure when as its been more than 10 years since ive had a Ram but here are two shots from the internet. The older mirrors you had to litterally fold up and out for the lenses be in the same orientation as the default position of the Ford mirror. New ones are set up like the Ford and sit about the same distance from the cab as the Ford ones when they are collapsed.

2024 model change, unless he bought a 2023.
And, just for grins I tried to spec out a new 2500 Cummins 2WD, and you can't get a diesel 2WD CC LB!!!

No. I only extend when pulling my trailer and even then I forget more than half the time. He drifted but there is no way to prove it. He also scratched my door and my door glass. Last time this happened in my 2015 f250 I had dash cam video proof the driver crossed the double yellow and still got nothing from his insurance

Tradesman for Ram and XL for Ford are your only 2wd options. GM does offer 2wd on three or four trim levels though.
