Sunday morning got up early. Me & the wife with our 3 dogs jumped in our 2021 6.7 Diesel Super Duty. Drove up to the San Juan Forest to take the dogs for a hike. Went hiking & came back down the forest service road & started back towards home on the hwy. Started up Yellow Jacket Pass & had went just a few miles when all of a sudden the truck started shuttering, shaking & vibrating. I was on cruise control @ 65mph. when this happened. It was enough of a power loss & vibration to knock off the cruise control. This lasted maybe 3-4 seconds maybe. The engine went right back to normal & we made it home 30 minutes later just fine. But, I could not figure out what happened. Did the CP4 pump start to shell? Didn't think so as the motor was running too smooth. Did the transmission have a hiccup? So, I get home & start checking the truck over. Idles fine sounds fine. All seems good. I opened the hood, motors fine everything turning fine. Shut off the motor & what do I see? The drive belt is all black & shinny with a groove worn into the top of it & the edge of the belt ruffled up on the edge in a few spots. I knew right then what happened. While I was out hiking with the dogs a chipmunk got up underneath the truck. The dogs were looking for it before we left. I guess when we got on the hwy & going 65 it got sucked into the drive belt assembly. Sure did make the engine shutter. We are lucky that the belt didn't break & we were stranded along the road. A year ago 2 big ground squirrels were under in & I started it. Got caught in the drive belt also. Sounded like the motor was coming apart when I started the truck. It actually killed one of them, the other one got away. Got lucky both times & nothing was torn up. Darn critters!
Anyone else have this ever happen to them?
I found a mouse in my Honda Pilot when I swapped the radiator this winter. It lost its head between a pulley and the serpentine belt, the body was still there all dried up. No idea when it happened, just glad it wasn't chewing wires anymore....
