my 1996 aerostar will not come out of park, and the brake lights will not work either.this all started yesteday,i check the fuses under dash, the are all fine.does anybody no if the is a relay somewere eles in the van,or any hints of what could be wrong.
I don't know of any direct relationship between the stop lights and the transmission shift lever.
I'm sure you have the key in the ignition and turned on when trying to move the shift lever, but your problem may be the lock mechanism associated with the ignition key. If you do not have one, get a repair manual (Chilton's or Haynes) for your model.
As for the brake lights start simple. First check the stop light bulbs to be sure they are ok. Then check the brake light switch attached to the break pedal.
thanks for the info,it was the brake light switch,at the brake pedel,on this model if you do not have brake lights you cannot engage the shifter, but it fix now so thanks again.
