Could it be the power steering pump? These are known to make noise in Aerostars. Is the noise louder when turning the steering wheel, whether driving or not? Maybe your 3.0 just has a better pump?
I have to go with Ron on this one. Right after getting my van I noticed a power steering pump whine. Checked the fluid level and it was fine. Have no leaks on any sort and the system seems to work great so I checked out this forum and this seems preety common with these vans. If it's not too loud probably little to worry about.
I agree with everyone. Turn the wheel a little in each direction at an idle and see if that sounds worse. If so, change your PS fluid with real power steering fluid (not the recommended ATF) and that should quiet things down a lot.
Any of the accessories can be making the noise. If you can somehow bypass each one by re-routing the belt, you may be able to isolate it.
I once had a water pump making a whining noise, and it eventually leaked, and had to be replaced. This was on the 2.8 liter version of the 4 liter v6 engine.
If the noise increases with acceleration, you might check the idler pulley's. There's two, one for each belt. Spray each idler roller with WD40 and see if your noise changes or goes away. Do one at a time so you can determine which may be bad.
