People have put 8" rear ends in these trucks. I'm not saying that's what you have. 9" rears had all kinds of different housing shapes, and it looks more like a 9" to me.
But, we are talking about something nearly 60 years old. Even if it is an 8", it's is an OK rear, unless you start mentioning big power. For driving around, it would be fine. Being a Mopar guy, it woulda been kinda cool if it had the rear end my truck came with....a Dana 60.
Now, put one of your 440s in it, and that 8" may start groaning a bit!
I was a Mopar guy back in the day too. And I agree....dem earlier Dodge trucks be UGLY!
all good points. This thing wreaks of smogger 70’s 460. Still has cast intake and stock manifolds. Doubt it’s making big power. I don’t mind the 8” rear. I think you can still get center sections. Love that style.
I have 8 3/4 in my charger. So easy to change gear ratio. I have 3.23’s now… but also a 3.91 on the shelf. If I really want to cruise, I have a 2.94 open carrier that was original to the car.
Is that what it has? A 460? In stock form, they are "tugboat motors." Buckets of torque down low, unimpressive max power. Keep it below 4500rpm and let the torque do its thing!
With a plethora of 8 3/4" center sections, you could swap in an 8 3/4 rear end, and share punkins. Just a thought. Rear end width might be close to a B body width. Or an E body housing for something just a bit wider

I won’t be swapping a mopar rear in this, my hypocrisy only goes so far lol.
this was originally a 352 truck. 4th digit of the vin is a Y. Hopefully that means it doesn’t have a super steep rear gear. I’ll know more by this time tomorrow
On the road at 4:30 this morning from long island. Got on orient Pt ferry at 7. Crossed to new London CT. got to sellers house on NH by 11:45. Took it for a test ride. Runs a bit rough but it’s a solid piece.
200 miles in a vehicle I’d never seen before today back to new London CT. On the ferry now headed back to Long Island.
One stop at an O’riellys to swap out the plastic fuel filter of death.
All in all a good day. Needs a tuneup and tires balanced but she’s a runner.
Arrival at sellers house Detour to Orielly’s On the ferry On the road at the crack of ***

Idles smooth, no noises that shouldn’t be there. Shifts good
It was all highway and i was able to cruise about 65. As Luke Colms would say- one arm out the window and one hand on the wheel. It’s 58 year old twin ibeam fabulousness so I felt I needed to respect it but it never felt dangerous.
If it had a tach I could tell you the RPM’s but i just went full send… and temp gauge no worky so I’m choosing to believe it didn’t run hot lol. Never boiled over even in stop and go traffic. Starts the the slightest tap of the key hot or semi cold.
Anyone know what my auto steering column is out of? My ford friend said he didn’t thing these came with column auto shifters…he thinks it’s 70’s bronco.
The guy I bought it from said he had someone convert it from auto on the floor to column shift and bench seat so i know this truck was not born with this column. Can’t see it in pics but below where it says “custom cab” they did a hack job clearancing the dash.

They definitely did come with column shift automatics. Would guess you've got a 70's truck column with original wheel. Prolly a C6 behind the 460. The original automatic behind the 352 would've been a cruiseomatic. It had a different shift sequence from the C6

thanks. It’s pretty janky. Upper bearing wasted and sloppy. I’d love to swap it for an aftermarket tilt column painted black. For now I’d like to order he upper bearing and get a smaller wheel. With power steering, this truck just doesn’t need that huge wheel. I’d love to get the same style wheel but smaller
i believe you are right about the years you mentioned. Found this on ebay. Pic for reference only.

'66 was the first year power steering was offered in these trucks but kept the same steering wheel from previous years. Tilt steering was available in later trucks and would be an easy swap. If you can find one.

thanks again. Someone converted this one already so if I found a later tilt column it may bolt right in?
It may. Going from non power steering to power steering would be tricky depending on which steering gear you had originally and trickier still due to the different shift sequence. That's why most opt for a floor shift. In your case, depending on what was swapped in, it could very well be plug and play.

SWEET SLICK! I kinda like the color scheme!
If it indeed have a 'auto on the floor' ....it wasn't stock. IIRC, all '66 automatics and three speed manuals were on the column. Only four speed stick transmissions had the shifter on the floor.
yea great colors on that thing.
I just redid all my brake lines. took some time and was fun learning how to align and bend tubing. cleans it up a bunch too.
Good luck!
