Hello,
I have a 1956 F100 with a 272. I went to install a new Pertronix Flame Thrower. The distributor hits the head and wont install. I am estimating I am 3/8" away from the distributor dropping in. Any suggestions - Thanks

The shaft and gear measured the same as the stock distributor. One thing I noticed is the Pertronix is approximately 4" in diameter, the stock distributor is approximately 3.5" in diameter. I will take pics and send. Thanks

The Flamethrower is the coil, correct? So the problem is the size of the distributor?
If the new dist is truly hitting that tiny spot on the head, a grinder will make quick removal of that little piece of flash on the corner of that pad. No big deal. But do make sure it truly is hitting and that it's actually keeping it from dropping in. What you're describing is common when the dist shaft isn't fitting down over the oil pump drive shaft. You might try rotating the dist shaft slightly, or turning the pump drive shaft slightly for them to mesh, which is what 5851a is saying.
Thank all of you for your advise. I will try to install again later on. I was moving the distributor body and shaft yesterday and had no luck. Maybe I was making to big of adjustments.
OK, it is definitely the head stopping the distributor from dropping in. I did a little filing, not enough. If you look at the distributor, you can see where it is scratched from hitting the head
