I just bought a Coachmen 5th wheel camper I think the empty wieght is around 7500lbs. I have a 2001 f-250 4x4 crewcab with a v-10. I hope this will not be a strain on the truck. I have not had the truck but a month but it seems to enough torque and horsepower to handle it.
What is the GVWR on the truck? You can NOT, I repeat can NOT exeed that limit. That is the combined weight of your truck, people in your truck, fuel, luggage, the trailer, stuff in the trailer, and anything else attached to your rig. If you exceed that number, you are pushing the limits of the truck, and asking for disaster.
Thanks again for the info. I will be going to pick my truck and camper tomorrow or Tuesday. I will have about a 60 mile drive back home that should let me know how the truck will do. Thanks again.
You shouldn't be close to your GCVWR, might even have 4 or 5 k to spare. You might have an issue with bed rail clearance though. I had to have my axles flipped on my fifth wheel in order to clear the bed of my 4x4 F250. Which actually wasn't a problem for me because my trailer is a toy hauler for dirt bikes and quads....so I need extra gound clearance when I drive off road anyway. Take a look after everything is hooked up and make sure you have enough clearance between your truck bed and the overhand of the fifth wheel. Also take a look on level ground and see if the trailer is sitting level as well. You can play with your pin box height, but sometimes that puts too much weight on the rear axles and could cause a dangerous blowout.
No one has mentioned the clearance needed between the fiver overhang and the truck bed rails. 6" is considered by many to be a minimum. I run 8" because of some unique situations getting into and out of my driveway. 4" clearance is almost guaranteed to create a problem somewhere down the line.
The guys at the dealership told me I would have to take my toolbox off. They said it could get into the camper when making a turn on a hill. I really do appreciate all the feedback I have been getting.
