So my starter hangs up , as in turn key it cranks the engine and sometimes it won't stop cranking unless I pull the battery cables . I have installed a new solenoid that didn't help so it must be inside the starter , probably just needs a disassembly and a clean reassemble (truck has been sitting five years). What do you think?
I almost positive the issue is in the starter but I could be wrong.
New batteries
New fender solenoid (twice)
Starter rebuilt with new solenoid
New ignition steering column switch
Checked movement of steering column switch activator rod
Its got to be a starter issue I can't think of anything else to check...
putt the output wire off fender relay. if the the starter will stop spinning and you should hear the relay disengage and the will be no power to the terminal. if there is still power there, it is either a bad relay, bad cable, or low battery. i have changed 5 brand new out of the box relays to get one good one. new means nothing anymore with chinesium parts.
melted cables are usually from a bad connection
Think about it for a moment, only resistance will make heat, not a solid connection with almost 0 resistance.
Do you see what I'm saying though? If you consider Ohm's law (volts = current * resistance in your chart), then it doesn't seem possible for current (amps) to increase with decreasing voltage in this scenario. Otherwise, why wouldn't we expect current to approach infinite as voltage approaches zero?
Joseph, you are correct. it defies ohms law. and i can not explain it either. even with a degree in electrical engineering.
but i can tell you with fact of 25 years working automotive, a low battery will produce enough current to make relays "stick" and not release until the cables are disconnected.
i have seen many starter relays ruined with burned contact plates inside from low battery voltage too.
