PS fluid

Should I replace?
Is sucking it out and filling a few times good enough?
Or is removing the low pressure line and draining it much better?

405k Ex 7.3 4x4 1 owner since new.

I evacuated my power steering fluid many years ago as my PS pump was making bad noises.

Refilled using Mobil 1 ATF.

Once in a while I do siphon out the reservoir and top off the PS reservoir with new ATF.

Original PS pump still going strong and quite as a church mouse! I have OEM rims and LT285/75/16 tires.

I also use the Mobil1 in my "built trans" 4R100. Great product that has been in my truck for many years.

I approach this much like transmission oil on newer cars. Drain the pan, fill with new every couple years. Sure, you are never replacing all the oil, but it isn't exposed to combustion level contaminants, so no real reason to. I have a dedicated turkey baster (make sure to clear with wife first, if applicable) for this job. Now, if you are replacing major components in the system, yes, I would flush. Just like if I'm replacing the transmission it just makes sense to then.

That's where I'm leaning also. I use Mark Ks procedure on the excursion ATF, but for my other vehicles I do the drain and fill for ATF and bleed the brakes every 40k or so. I've honestly never done anything for PS, don't have any issues, but a simple transfer pump extraction, fill, turn left and right a few times and repeat seems simple and valuable.

If you want good, new fluid in the entire system, pull the low pressure hose and do it correctly.

Agree 100%, but factor in time and complexity, and does replacing 90% vs 40% I wonder make any serviceable difference?

Its a 2qt system. Flushing takes minutes and ensures all the air is out of the system. Maybe just me, but I've never perceived this maintenance as time-consuming nor complex. To each their own.

I follow the above method. I'm on my computer now and see you have a V10 in your signature.

Procedure looks to be a bit different detailed here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...intenance.html
