hi, my husband and i are looking to buy my fathers cherry ford f250, camper special 460 engine, . it is a awesome truck. but it is having some trouble.
it runs rough..meaning it shakes, and when we step on the gas it wants to go but doesn't until you push hard on the gas. then it vibrates shakes etc..
to let you know what we have done so far:
the spark plugs were replaced
the plug wires were tested for spark..-no prob there.
the rotor and cap was replaced on distributer.
we have been told by a mechanic this would be one of the problems.
does anyone have any ideas, or had the same problem.
thanks for any help,
edit :
sorry i forgot to include the year.
it is a 1977 camper ford f250( built up to be one ton), 460 engine, 4x4, camper special.
my dad said it just started acting funny one day after getting gas. he figured he got some bad gas, put in a fuel treatment, and i think he said changed the filter.

If the problem is new and sudden right after the tune up then look at the firing order and check that the spark plug wires are installed correctly.
No doubt that the fuel system could be contaminated with water, just don't overlook the ignition system. Since the ignition system has been worked on there is a chance the firing order of the spark plug wires is off. Remember that mistakes are made on many tuneups everyday.
Check for a vacuum leak from a hose that has a crack in it or just not connected. Was the carburetor rebuilt or is it original and maybe in need of a rebuild? Have you checked that the choke isn't stuck and flooding the engine. An over choked engine will feel like it has no power until you step on the gas a lot. Does the exhaust look clean or black and sooty?
Check the timing, i had the same problem on my green 78 4x4, it would start, but sound like it was running on about 3 cylenders, retarded the timing about 6 degrees, now it breaks the rear u joints right off.
I suggest that you remove every part that was installed during the tune-up and start over with NEW parts. Odds are that will fix your problem and if nothing else it will eliminate them as the cause. Good Luck
Hi,
we still have not figured out what is wrong with the Truck . We did buy it today, My dad offered us a Great deal I think 2500. I just wish I knew what was wrong with it. I think we are going to have it hooked to one of those machines so we know exactly what it is.
I was wondering how I can put up a picture to show you the truck..
A neighbor looked at it today that works on cars all the time he said it had some (back by) to go along with the other things..
Thanks
melissa

Well, the problem can only be either one or a few things.
To run an engine Fuel, Air, Spark delivered at the correct time in unison.
No doubt it is getting air .
1) 1st establish that you have fuel to the intake manifold
pull on the linkage a few times to see if fuel is coming out of the carb.
2) Check Ignition for spark to sparkplugs. If there is spark Notice what color the spark is an report back
Now you check the timing>
Once you get the number one piston to TDC just bepfre the POWER stroke >
The piston goes to TDC twice per cycle At Power Stroke & the end of the Exhaust stroke.
On the Ford engine : Make sure the distributor rotor is lined up with Number one plug (Front passenger side of engine) cylinder's are = 1 2 3 4
other side = 5 6 7 8
I have 302 in a 1979; Haynes has 460 cylinder configuration like the 302. This cylinder numbering caused me problem with 302 because of my knowledge of Chevy SB engines. If in fact 460 is as Haynes has it and your using something else; it would cause your problem. Let's hear from more 460 experts. Haynes order for cylinders is:
passenger side: 1, 2, 3, 4
drivers side: 5, 6, 7, 8
firing order 15426378

Very nice looking ride - I like it good price too...
Try to think of it logically and test/eliminate one thing at a time. Or you will end up buying parts that you may not need.
Did it run rough before the tune up? Did the tune up change it at all?
If it was already running this way and the tune up did nothing, then you know you haven't found the problem yet. If it runs rough because of the tune up, then something was done wrong.
Next I'd check the choke operation, timing and search for vacuum leaks.
