Steering wheel gap to column
After changing out my steering box, rag joint, turn signal assembly, etc - I put the the column back together and noticed I had a huge gap. This is with the wheel actually bottomed out on the splines.
It's problematic because the lobe on the steering wheel that triggers the cam for turn signal release doesn't it even hit it, just totally passes over it. I don't think my horn contact switch makes contact either.
So I unbolted the column underneath the dash and noticed it was already slid up as much as the bracket allows, nor could I get it to move even with the bolts out.
Anyone else run into this? Does the wheel have to be pulled and plate on the other side of the firewall (under master cylinder) loosened in order for the column to slide up? Also, why would I be out of travel in the slots in my columns bracket that bolts it to the dash? I'm going to have to slot them more with a Dremel or something to get that extra quarter inch I need.
They look like I'd expect after 60 years. not that bad but kinda squished.
It's a '67, Bendix box which I just replaced along with rag joint. It is an original power steering truck, I have not replaced anything in the column.
