I currently have the scmt 1700 in my 2000 7.3 diesel..I have never really been happy with the tuner. I drove my friends truck with the newer 1705 on the lowest setting and I was impressed. Our trucks are identical, 4x4 cc, with B&B downpipe and exhaust, afe intakes and gauges. I would like to upgrade but I am not sure what tuner would be the best for my use. I am not racing around, I am usually pretty easy on my truck, I do quite a bit of in town driving( dropping kids off to school and going to work), we do tow a 7000-8000# travel trailer or boat. When we do take our travel trailer out it is usually in the mountains. I am concerned about the reliability of the programer since we do a bunch of trips with the family. And in a perfect world Id like the programmer that has the least effect on bad fuel econ. Ok,Ok, my friends truck runs better than mine and I dont like it! Seriously, any info would be appreciated, I hope to be getting one of these soon. Thanks.
I don't think you'd be disappointed with either the 1705 or the Predator. Both are very good products. The Predator has more features, and it lets you adjust the tranny firmness (the Superchips doesn't). Both will give a decent mpg improvement in the low and mid-ranges, and you'll probably break even on the higher settings.
The downpipe, exhaust and intakes will go a long way to help mileage with the higher settings since you'll get a more complete burn of the fuel.
As to reliability ratings, the newest update to the Predator is getting very good reviews (and the Superchips is also a very trouble-free product). In extremely rare occasions a programmer may hang while programming a vehicle (if the battery is weak it can happen). If this happens you may have to send a Superchips Microtuner back to Superchips to have them reset it. With Diablo you can call and they can give you a reset code over the phone.
