so far for $4000 they’ll replace the pump and gaskets, hoses, tstat, intake manifold gaskets, and timing chain and gears, and front main seal, and I’ve asked them to first qualify engine compression ($150) and also replace head gaskets
A rebuilt long block - with heads and timing chain, no manifolds, valve covers, oil pan, timing chain cover or water pump - is under $3000. A Ford reman long block will cost more but I don’t see ‘79 460 listed. Shipping to a commercial location is $3-400. Your mechanic can estimate transferring parts and installation. I’d give it some thought because it sounds like it might be close if the heads come off. I doubt anyone stocks such a long block so it’ll be a couple of months before one is delivered.
Mine is a 1992 (or 1991) E350 carrying an RV. If the compression test shows bad I’ll scrap the whole project and dump in (another) coolant sealant in a can.
This burns a quart every 3099 miles and it’s low power on the hills. I kinda love the rig. Totally in agreement with a long block.
what vendor would you suggest for a manufactured engine? This service writer suggested LKQ they probably already sold the good ones.
Oops, sorry about the wrong model year. I must have crossed threads.
While a good used engine can be the way to go, the 460 retired, what, 25 years ago? The chances of finding a good used one are slim. If you find one, will a 25yo 460 with 25K miles give you the next 25K miles without trouble or leaks? Might as well buy the RV the good used 460 is in
Jasper was the go to for reman long blocks and crates but I hear their reputation isn’t what it used to be. Someone like @manicmechanic007 can tell you where to look.
I’m pretty sure the water pump is leaking and will get it resealed. I am not so certain if the intake manifold is leaking. Can the pump work be done first and and the intake manifold done later without impacting the water pump if there truly is a leak with the intake manifold ?
One concern with smoke testing a manifold is it can leak internally and you won’t see the precise leak point. Spraying carb cleaner is more telling. Is it safe to use propane where there are tired spark plug wires?
My opinion - replacing manifold and valley gaskets is straightforward but best done by someone with experience. Plenty can go wrong like breaking bolts and studs, not remembering how things go back together, and dropping things into a cylinder with an open valve Experience will identify and address things that don’t look right along the way.
