Overheating 5.0

My 18 5.0 has 147000 miles and I have been noticing that when sitting in drive thru or idling for extended periods the fan would kick on and the temp would start going up. I could kick it in park or neutral and raise the rpms and it would cool back down. I also had logged a code for the secondary coolant pump. This started back last winter. I went ahead and ordered water pump, thermostat, seals, belt and secondary coolant pump. So it has progressively gotten worse, it still hadn't overheated but would still run warmer than normal. So one day this week on way to work the temp hand went just above normal. Again it still didn't throw any warnings or anything like that. Anyway last night I changed the water pump, thermostat and secondary coolant pump. When I removed the belt I found that the shaft in the pump had loose motion. So I got it all back together and ran and so far it has not ran above normal. I drove it last night and drove it almost 50 miles this morning to work and all is well. I guess the water pump bearing going out like that is common on these engines?

What's normal? I have seen vehicles go 100,000, 200,000 miles or more and never need a water pump. OTOH, I have seen a water pump fail after 10,000 miles.

However, after 147,000 miles, your water pump may have decided it's time to retire.
