I have a 94 7.3 IDI Factory Turbo w/ almost 152k miles on it. I was in fixing my Vac Pump and I'm 98% sure my water pump is original. On these motors is there a milage the water pump should be replaced at or what factors would warrant a water pump change?
The tell tale there's an issue is when coolant starts dribbling through the weep hole at the bottom of the pump, this shows the internal seals are giving out and coolant is making it into the bearing area.
I don't know the specifics on milage/hours for the IDIs, but I just replaced the original water pump on my 1986 (somewhere around 180K). The pump wasn't having any issues, but truck wasn't getting up to temp in the winter and would run pretty hot in the summer (thermostat). Went ahead and did all the hoses, water pump, thermostat and coolant with SCAs to know everything was good.
Bought my pickup new and I'm on my 3rd pump at 249,000 miles. Wiggle the fan blades back and forth and if you have play determine if it's in the fan clutch or pump shaft. Play in the pump shaft means it's time for replacement, a leak out the weep hole won't be far behind. It's a good idea to check for play at every oil change.
