I have a 77 F 150 and was looking to put a 4 speed in it and put a newer steering system on it. What kind of steering would work best for it? What all will i need for the 4 speed swap? Any advice is appreciated.
Your easiest way to do it is to get a complete manual transmission "parts truck" setting next to yours. Lol You need a different pedal assembly for in the cab and that might make for a different power brake booster and master cylinder. And all the stuff that mounts on the frame. So you want a manual trans (T-18 or NP-435)? Gotta find one of them. Also need a manual transmission flywheel, eng or block plate, manual trans starter, bell housing (that fits you motor application (SB versus BB?) w/clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. The corresponding trans cross member, and correct length drives shaft. You can stay with the auto steering column just have to disconnect some stuff and by pass/wire around the Neutral Safety Switch wiring. They do make a manual trans steering column but those can be hard to find and or $$. So still want a 4 speed? Oh yea you also have to wire up the reverse light to work off the manual trans.
For the best steering if 2wd or 4wd... IMO get a NEW Red Head or Blue Top steering box and then do a Saginaw p/s pump swap in. They sell kits. Also ditch the flex joint steering shaft set up and get a Borgeson steering shaft with a u joint instead of the flex (rag) joint.
Also look into doing a Y to T steering linkage set up to get the most out of the other new parts. Now 2wd might be a little different as far as steering mods. Most of my experience is 4wd.
