Brake rotors

I need to change the brake rotors on a 93 bronco 4wd. I have been told that you need a special tool to remove the rotors from a 4wd. I was wondering if anyone knows what i really need to remove the hub and how easy it would be to do. I'd rather fix things myself then pay someone to have all the fun. thanks

you can get the socket you need at napa or carquest. you can get the nut off with a punch and a hammer, but you can't torque the nut back on with that. just go get the socket.

It is not a hard thing to do. As for the special tool, its a spanner wrench. It looks like a socket with 4 tabs sticking out. About 15 bucks at the parts store. There will be springs and what not as you disassemble the hub but nothing to nasty. Just lay them out in the order you removed them and then put em back the opposite order.

I just replaced one of my rotors and found the spanner wrench tool at Advanced Auto for $10... my passenger side hub has a different assembly (newer model) due to a replacement part and it needs a different tool to remove the hub.... Anyone know where I can pick this one up and what it's called.

I have a '94 Bronco.

look in my gallery for a picture of the part I'm talking about...

A replacement part? Both sides should be the same and use the same tools. What is the replacement part?

The autollocking hub assembly was replaced with a newer part about a year ago because "Brake Experts" (and I use the term loosely... hahaha.... ) did not install the hub correctly after I had them work on the brakes and turn the original rotors and they fell out on the road somewhere. I went to Ford and they had to replace the assembly with a newer one probably the ones used on the newer trucks. So the part they sold Brake Experts to replace the original is different than the other side. A picture is on my gallery.

I havent used it but I know that there is another "hub tool" for the newer hub you have. Find a local tool retail store, (Here it is Tool King), and take your spanner wrench with you so they see you have that one already. They will be able to get you the other one or at least show it to you so maybe from your local parts store you can rent one. Pull BOTH sides apart and replace them with new Warn hubs. It doesnt sound like you do alot of hard core wheeling so you wont need to pay the extra for the premium hubs. I have their standard ones and they have held up for me even when I did go wheeling up in the mountains. Now, if you have the 3 bolt covers for your hubs, then you will need the conversion kit. 5 or 6 bolt covers, no kit needed. Let me know what you find on the other hub tool. I woud like to know just what it is and what it looks like.
Good Luck!

OH!!! I just read again your last post...AUTOLOCKING HUB? Get rid of them!. They are garbage. and worthless if you are already stuck before you put it in 4x4. You need to roll about 10 ft before they will engage so if you are already stuck, you are S.O.L. Do go with the warn hubs. They are more durable, strtonger, and when they are locked in they are locked in. SO if you get stuck in 2wd, you arent "stuck".

I agree with the manual hubs, i am glad i have them on my truck. I'm changing rotors for my friend, who couldnt find his A** with both hands and a flashlight, so of course he does no kind of 4 wheeling. But thanks for the advice.
