So I just got some new shoes on my truck. (1991 f150 302) And wanted to share how it is for me. (I had 31s to begin)
New tire size 33x11.5 (285/75/r16)
Power: It is a little more sluggish than before, but it's not bad, drives basically the same, it would benefit from 4.10s, but they aren't necessary (3.55 now)
Brakes: Increase in braking distance. Again not much, but they don't slow down as fast.
Steering: based on what I've heard, I am genuinely surprised it still steers quite well. I can't wheel lock without serious rubbing on the radius arms, but there is plenty for normal driving.
Notes: the only suspension mods I have are Moog cc824 springs, and Bilstein 4600 shocks, nothing else.
New tires are the exact same as old, just bigger
They are MT tires, and weigh like 55 pounds each IIRC. Aggressive tread.
31s 33s
I would start researching more "fun stuff" for this rig, but turns out I need $1000 in front end work ...yay.
Looks good! Glad the springs and tires worked out. Bummer about the front end wear parts but it's a semi regular thing on these old trucks.
I've got 4.10 gears and a mildly built 351W on 33's, empty it's a good combo but at altitude and loaded I wish I had gone a little deeper. 4.30 is available for the 8.8 but not the d44. Need to swap in a d50 third member up front (bolt in swap) to have 4.30 as an option. But, I would probably just go 4.56 with a 302.
I have 285/75/16 on my 5.8 and 4.10 and hardly noticed a difference when I went up from stock tire size. If anything slightly lower rpm at highway speeds. 4.10 should be enough so you can still not be stuck at 65 mph on the freeway. I had 4.88 in my 450 and 80mph was just about red lined
It was 2800 on an old 7.3 so ya almost redlined. I think anything more than 4:10 with 33s would be annoying at highway speeds if you don’t have a trailer 24/7 or a load I do t see the upside. I’d be annoyed with my 5.8 on the highway because where I live 70mph is slow and 75 is ideal. The slow lane is I’d be revving higher on a stock engine designed for lower rpm torque
My 96 dually 7.3/S5-47 does about 2500rpm at 70. 4.10:1. 245/75R16s. Yours was not made to cruise at high speeds. IDI and DI 7.3 have crap flowing heads, they need RPM for airflow to keep EGT down and power up.
My experience with 285 and a 4:10 that I mentioned does I reckon
I’m stating my vote would be 4.10 is all. Enough for a 33” tire, no down shifting on hills
I did not have idi. I had a powerjoke. What I was trying to say was I didn’t like the higher rpm at my areas cruising speeds and in a half ton I don’t see it as necessary. In my 450 it was great for the heavy things I hauled and towed but I don’t see having anything higher than a 4.10 without much taller and heavier tires
302s are turds stock and even uncorked, let alone trying to move heavy *** wheels and tires. Height is not the only factor, sheer weight makes a huge difference
2200 at 70 is not screaming. It is allowing the 302 to nearly get up enough steam to get out of its own way. City econ will increase, freeway too.
