In the near future, I'm going to attempt to tackle a removal of my driveshaft on my 03 Excursion so I can inspect/replace U-joints, carrier bearing, etc. But rolling up on my back under the Ex intimidates me and I need to be confident that this thing isn't going to drop on me. I have 4 6-ton jack stands and a 4-ton jack. I could place a jack stand under each axle. It only needs to go up a few inches. But, still, this monster scares me.
What's the best way to jack this thing up and be assured that it isn't going to fall, no matter how hard I yank on bolts/nuts, etc.? Shoot me your ideas, best practices, and pics if possible. I have kids and need to be around for a while. 😂😂
If jacking up the vehicle scares you this much, then you're probably better off just taking the truck in to get the work done.
...
Let me rephrase. Jacking it up the wrong way scares me. If I'm confident I'm doing it right, I'll be fine. Otherwise I wouldn't have posted in here for advice.
You have a driveshaft carrier bearing?
I've got a pair of 10 ton stands I use, I played all under the truck when doing the rear end last year, I'm still alive.
In addition to using properly rated jack stands, I always throw the spare tire under the frame near where I am working. In the odd case that a stand fails, I hope that it prevents the fall from crushing me completely.
