How do I discharge my a/c? My 4 banger ranger died, so I'm in the process of taking out the enigine. I've got everything else taken out, but the a/c, because there's no mobile place that will discharge my a/c for me. Is it ok to just let the 134 out myself? I think most shops just catch your refrigent to re-use it. So is it really bad to just let the stuff out w/o catching it?
Actually, you can buy a balloon to catch the R134a if you want. It's kind of big, but will hold the gas. Most mechs will not admit to breaking the law. There are two A/C sites I know of that may give a better answer: http://www.ackits.com/ .. go to the 'forums' http://www.aircondition.com/ .. go to the board
Do you HAVE to discharge the system, or can you coat-hanger it off to the side? Be sure, as it will cost $$ to have it evacuated and recharged, plus the cost of the accumulator, as it should be replaced if you leave the system open to the air for any lenght of time (last one I bought was $143 for a Sable, but included the suction hose assy.

I think I do have to take it off all the way including the hoses, because some of the lines cross right in front of the engine block, so it would make it kind of difficult to get the engine out I think. So what sort of ballon do I use if I were to do that? Also what do you do with the refrigant after you catch it in the ballon? Can I get the balloon at my local autoparts store? Is there away to post a picture of my engine and the a/c parts on this site?
Balloon would be from an appliance repair shop, as they are spozta catch the R12 etd when they open a reefer or freezer system. I suppose you take it to the A/C shop when you want to recharge... or they can dispose of it for you. (rip u off)
I don't know about pix, but the compressor can be unbolted and kinda leaned over the top of the radiator and tied in place... without discharge...

just release it from teh valve. its no big deal, and many people dont believe in the cfc destroying ozone theory anyways...besides, your small amount of gas isn't even a drop in the ocean to how much is released each day.
dont worry about it...just dont cut a line or anything...the pressure is very high.
Did that thanks for the help. The engines ready to come out, now I'm just having problems with getting the transmission disconnected. There's so little clearance to get the socket in there and to get the bolts loose. Does anybody have any ideas on what tool to use to get it unbolted the easiest way?
