I've never seen one move that easily and make that much noise...or any noise for that matter.

I get that the joint needs to move, it's the sleeve on the other end that seems wonky.

Use to be a time moving parts had zerk fittings and grease was their best friend. Society has dumbed down so many now the grease gun has too many moving parts to be figured out. Do away with most of the easy diy maintenance items.

Yes, greed is part of it but these manufacturers just give what the majority wants. 🙄

Add a crap load of bling. Put keys in ignition. That's if it comes with a key now.

Make appointment for noises and pm's.

Wait for appointment to pin point noise and do pm's.

Wait for parts to come in to repair noise and pm's.

Customer complaints manufacturers sux.

Rinse and repeat.

Can see the sleeve moving, which it will, but can't see if it's moving relative to the far end. Might want to jack up that tire and see if it has play...indicating worn or defective steering linkage.

You thought it was worth it or you wouldn't have paid that much.

Zerks or not, ball joints and tie rods have a limited life span. As long as the seals hold, non zerk joints will maintain their grease for a long time. None of the joints on my Flex have zerks yet all of them have nearly 180K miles of rough IL roads on them. If they have zerks, half the places that do oil changes don't even touch them.

So which would be worse, sealed joints that usually hold up to several hundred K miles, or zerk joints that don't get greased for the non DIYr? How many have had to replaced their front U joints because they never got greased? Just because they are sealed with no zerk fitting, doesn't mean they are cheap throw aways. Zerk or not, the amount of abuse they take is what kills them. I just replaced the ball joints on my daughters car with 200+K miles on them, still had plenty of grease and there was no rust, they were just beat to crap from the poor roads.

There's a lot of truth in that. I suspect the majority of folks on this forum are DIY types who do keep up with maintenance. But that doesn't mean the majority of truck owners are that type.
