Newbie Question

Hey, new to the site and to wrenching. Got a 59 f100 and im doing the kingpins. Stupid question but how do you know which end of the spindle goes up? I have a shop manual but its not too much help with this. Do the grease fittings aim toward the front of the vehicle or is there some other way to know which end goes up?

steering?

Hey, i just pounded on new kingpins but my 59 is still all over the road. Like, im scared to take it out on the main road. It still has the original steering components and i wouldnt mind replacing everything but will it really make that much of a difference to replace tie-rods and whatnot? id love to take it out to get some ice creams with the wife but no way im doing it with it wandering all over the place and hard to steer even at 25 mph.

Welcome to FTE!

Your original steering components all have wear, and that wear is cumulative in the steering system and will cause excessive play and wandering.

An old friend described driving their '57 F600, "....it's like trying to run a Herd of goats down the road....".

The box can be rebuilt. Redhead is one outfit, I'll have to look up the other if someone else doesn't get back to you first.

I agree, 75-year-old parts need to be replaced to act nicer.

Thanks for the info! Yup, she drives like a tractor because that's basically what she is, really. I love searching for parts on line and getting tractor sites. i'm on it!
