My motors dead at 160something it has been a pile of --- all along its 5.4. Are they typically crappy motors? I wonder what will bolt in in its place. I would like a 302 carbed motor (better would be a 300 cid 6 cyl) in the truck but if its hell to convert and if a Trany change is required then no. 2004 F150 4x4 5.4 that got a whopping 10 mpg. It been years since I changed a motor last vehicle, I change engine on was my 1992 bronco. Looking for information. I rather have a 1960 f100 but that for another time. yes, I prefer no computers old school.

3V 5.4s got beaten with the “cheap” stick by the beancounters and although may see 200K miles, they do it with a struggle.
A remanned 3V 5.4 will usually (I won’t say always) have all the updated parts from Ford that make things better. Though, I’m not sure I’d stick with the junk tensioners with seals compared to the 2V 5.4 that had steel ratcheting tensioners (Remember the beancounters?) if I could help it.
Otherwise, straight swap? Another 3V 5.4, likely a 2V 4.6 from the same year truck, but definitely need the torque converter and computer as the same swap in a 10th Gen truck would require.
So, if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy, it ain’t the computers being trouble here. It’s the cheap parts.
5.4L 3V is a decent motor if well maintained. I was meticulous in my maintenance for 16 years and never had a problem, but I did have the up-dated motor built after 10/07.
I was wondering. This motor has enough Maintenace and issues it doubled the cost of the truck. I figured a direct replacement would be easiest, but I had to check. For me 200 t miles is a lifetime my 1990 is about 160 now yes, I driven it since it was new. So here a question the 2004 gets crappy milage and upgrades to improve that?
