it had too much refrigerant in it. We had to let some out.

The system is designed to cut off the compressor when pressure is too low. Chances are you didn't have too much refrigerant.
What is the PSI on the low side when it's on? (fan high, Max ac, engine running) Ambient temperature?
Also did you vacuum the system before charging it?

Probably undercharged or potentially bad fan clutch.
Insufficient data to diag completely.

You put Freon in the system? That isn’t good since a ‘96 should have R-134a as the refrigerant. The last system to use Freon (R-12) was 1993.

You added too much refrigerant? How did you manage to do that? There should be a sticker that states how many ounces to fill the system.

…or overcharged. There is a high side pressure switch on R-134a system.
Definitely do not have enough information. What are the low and high side pressure readings when static and running and at what ambient temperature?

Of course it could also be overcharged
Being factory 134 truck it has tag showing 38oz plus data all over showing it.
Bad fan clutch also would cause high side switch to trip due to no air flow...
