Hello all! My work vehicle is a former type 3 ambulance, around 10,000lbs, 7.3 idi, E4OD, etc, etc. While backing up slowly and applying the brakes, my driver side rear wheel made a loud clunk, and then, while driving and applying brakes there was heavy grinding, and a leaking wheel cylinder. It turns out the brake shoes anchor pin broke away from the backing plate. Keep in mind this is a Dualy with 3.5 inch brakes.
I need a new backing plate, or a way to fix this one. Are these cast iron, thus un-weldable?
Are these the same part as the F-350's backing plate? I haven't been able to find one for over 2 years in any of my local wrecking yards or online. Maybe I'm missing something?
Not sure which axle you have but the backing plates (whichever type) should unbolt from the axle flanges
Drum brakes right?
Take the axle out and the wheel hub with all the 90 wt gear oil in it off
Then remove the shoes
Behind the shoes should be the bolts that hold the backing plate on
If disc brakes tou should just have to remove the caliper and mount with the E brake cable
Then access the backing plate bolts
Good luck
Thanks for the reply! Yes, I have drum brakes. Removal of the backing plate is less of a concern than finding a replacement for the broken backing plate (or repairing it).
I've never done this before, so this info is still very helpful! Thanks again.
do you think this may be the part you are looking for? I know the page says unavailable but perhaps the part number is the correct one. having the part number will give your search a lot more options.
That appears to be what I need, however, I don't see a reference to brake shoe size (Does that matter?). That at least tells me that trucks and vans use the same part. I was led to believe it was specific to E-series. Too bad the part isn't available! :-(
If the number Annaleigh posted seems to the needed part use it to do a eBay or general Google search as someone some where might have one ready to sell.
The backing plate is stamped steel, like 12ga, if the anchor pin (at the top) had snapped off, that should be a weld job, from the back side.
I have not worked on my '92 in several years, but this I do remember. Always had a problem with the self adjusters with these drum brakes, on 2 different vans.
BTW.........we have what they call "cut-away" vans, if that's any help for you, and yes, this era van with a D70 or D80 rear end have matching parts with F series and some Dodge Ram vans/PU's.
