2024 connected navigation

So, on my 2024 I have a year of connected navigation included. I've verified in Fordpass that it is active. I see in sync4 that it says connected services are active, yet I never see traffic info on the maps?

Any suggestions?

Google maps.
Ford connected nav sucks.
Don't recall ever seeing any traffic info on mine while I had it.

That's what I normally use or waze. Just trying to see what ford provides for the year that I have it. So far, nothing exciting.

I haven't seen anywhere to make it visible... And I agree with Dave, it's nothing exciting.

That said, and off topic: It looks like you already know this... this nav isn't like the nav of yesteryear. If you don't pay after that first year, you lose essentially all functionality. It's not sold as "built in" nav like in '22 and before. It's subscription nav. To that end, I've only played with it a little bit. But since they're not going to let me use it after the year without paying; I'm not going to give Ford my data using their nav. I'll give it to another provider on my iPhone, etc. Don't be fooled. You bought built in nav, and all the required hardware... They just have it under a software lock after the "trial". If it was like the old stuff where you were allowed to use it without updates, I would have used it. I may have even paid occasionally. But everything's a subscription now, and this one is wholly unnecessary for me while alternatives exist.

this is exactly the reason for checking it out. To decide if it would be worth paying for.

That’s fair. I never did look.

Do you happen to know how much they’re asking after that first year? Maybe I’m in a huff over a few dollars and it would be worth it.

My 2017 had "built in" nav which never required a subscription, but my 2022 had a trial period with the option to pay for a nav-subscription. I downloaded Android-Auto for my 2022 and haven't looked back. The free Android-Auto performs better than the Ford (not free) navigation.

I believe it is $80 per year.

Yup. And for $80 you can buy a Garmin nav unit that works 10 times better and requires no further subscription!
Google is better, better looking maps and traffic and road conditions but not much other than that.

I'm undecided if I'll pay for it in my '23 after the trial period. I will say that on a recent trip I had it dump the route altogether while towing. Having the trailer/towing routing activated, when I ignored the directions and traveled the way I've gone before while towing our camper, instead of rerouting it said something like "no safe route detected" and just shut off the nav altogether. I deactivated the trailer/towing routing and put the address in again and it continued as normal. I wonder how they determine their trailer routes. The roads I was on were fine for my SRW and 26' camper, but may now have been for a dually with a large 5th wheel.

It looks like my 2024 F-450 Platinum came with a FREE one year of Connected Nav.
It looks like my 2023 Lightning Lariat came with 3 years of FREE Connected Nav

That sounds wonderful. And they want us to pay for that experience. $80 is a pretty steep price, too. Especially per year, with a sub-par product.

That said, Ford is only working with what the map data is giving it. If the map data says the road has a max weight of whatever, that’s what it’s going to go by. They may need a new provider if the data is that bad. Or, if it’s a situation of having the config wrong, they need to clean up the setup process so the dimensions are in there correctly.

or, last option… their programming is so bad that it misinterprets and mismatches the stored configuration of the vehicle and trailer with what the map data is providing and giving false incompatibilities.

Garmin has been doing this for a long time. If Ford can’t get it right, I suspect they would handle it for a fee. To me, that name means something and is something I would pay for. If I was using this GPS to earn a living as a hotshot or whatever… that’s not just an inconvenience going down the wrong road. That could be your livelihood when you get fined and such.

My truck is only a 2019 but I can tell you that it and the 2015 F-150 it replaced both displayed traffic and route guidance to avoid accidents, delays, etc. - but only when my Sirius / XM radio subscription with data was active. The maps showed the color-coded highway traffic conditions, the weather display showed live radar images, etc. I want to say traffic data only showed if I used the navigation with a destination plugged in but that may not be correct. Once I dropped Sirius / XM the traffic data and weather data dropped too. My old nav is not subscription based so I can't offer anything on that but I bet the newer connected stuff is dependent on the Sirius / XM data feed too.

Watch for commercials for XM radio. When they sponsor a "free weekend" (hoping to hook new customers) they typically turn on all the channels and the data feeds. You could test it then. They did it this past Memorial Day weekend and the traffic and weather data re-appeared in my truck.

But that was on the old sync3 system, new sync4 doesn't work like that. A real upgrade, huh?
