Cam Suggestions

Good morning and Happy 4th!! I have a 64 F100 with the 223 i6, and was thinking about putting a cam in it. I’ve been looking online attempting to reasearch. I would like for it to have a little chop. Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions? Is it a waste of time? Thanks!

You might get better info on this topic if you post it in the Inline 6 Forum here. Good luck.

Look at Clay Smith cams he grinds a lot of I6 cams. A friend of mine just got one for a 200 I6. Be aware that flat tappet cam cores are scarce, and it won't be getting any better soon since Textron stopped casting cast iron cores. If no one has a core for a 223 you can have your cam re-ground as long as the distributor gear is in good condition.

You might check with Clevite.
I've been running a Clevite '60's grind cam in my 300-six since 2002.
Realistically, I don't even know if they sell cams anymore, but worth a look. I'm running steel timing gears set also.

Thanks for almond the replies! I really appreciate the info, but I want to be a little more specific with my question. What duration should I look for? Any specs would be appreciated! Thanks again!!!

Kaz, your best option is to call Clay Smith and talk with them. The lift and duration will depend on two things. What you want from your engine and are there any blank cam cores for a 223 I6. If there are no blanks available, then you will have to send them your cam for a re-grind. A re-grind will limit what can be done to the cam, but most can be improved with a re-grind. Try searching on YouTube I'm sure there are videos of 223's with cams in them, maybe someone will say where they got their cam.
Be careful and don't open a can of worms. Big changes from a stock cam can require new springs, a change in installed height and different pushrods etc. I doubt that there would be any chance of piston to valve interference with that engine, but it could happen and needs to be checked if the cam is changed from stock.
