I've always been curious . . . well not always, but since I noticed this:
It looks like it is a vestigial pulley mount that they later decided to never use, but left the casting in place. It is perfectly aligned to be for an idler pulley for the belt.
What is this for?
Is there a configuration of vehicle/engine that uses this?
