Light group option

I saw a post about under dash lights and it lead me down a rabbit hole. Now I'm curious how hard it would be to find the addon harnesses for the clock and the cargo lights and etc there's none of these trucks in the local junkyard, and I'd rather not buy truck off of marketplace for just a few parts if i can avoid it.

My understanding on the clock the wiring is there at least on my 81 F100 Ranger harness that U installed into my 81 F100 Custom.
A clock did not come in either truck so I bought one off Ebay.

Thing to know is between 80 - 86 the clocks uses 3 different plugs and IIRC the wire colors changed a little too.
I was able to install a clock, just had to mess with the plug.

Also IIRC the radio wiring is there on the main harness but door speaker wiring is a add on harness. Easy to make if you want to install door speakers.

Now I have not looked into adding under dash lights but thought the plugs were there too?
Because I did not look into this or even know of the lights, I did not look when I had the harness out of the trucks.
I dont use the truck that much now when dark out so I dont have a need for them.

As for the cargo light I would not install one if the truck dose not have one to start with here is why.
I dont know what harness is needed but thought the dome light plugged into the trucks harness, not a add on?
In that case I dont know how the cargo light would work?

But the real big reason is not to run a cargo light you need to cut a hole in the roof for it and I hear the gaskets go bad and water leaks in and the roof starts to rust out. Just how bad do you need a crappy bed light to see what you are doing?
Get one of the HF lights that strap onto your head as they work pretty good.

The cargo light isn't high on my priorities for that reason but i would like the upgraded map light and the courtesy lights. I do believe the plugs are there but I'm wondering where to get the harnesses

I am sure it has been posted, both the map light & under dash, what was needed to install & make them work.

I want to say the dash lights, light had a pig tail that would plug in.
Think it is a single wire and the bulb grounds through the housing screwed to the dash?
Again I have not looked that deep into them as I did not want them that bad LOL

Same for the map lights but again thought it used the same wiring?
Letme see if I can find posts on either?

There's a post in the stickies section but i interpreted to saying there was a separate harness for the upgrade map light and a full on harness for the courtesy bulbs but maybe i misread

I guess it was this one you saw https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...y-options.html
I also came away with the same thing.
Map light uses a different harness from the floor up to the light housing.
Thing is the plug at the floor behind the seat only has so many wires so why dose it need to be changed for the map light?
Could it be the map harness splices more wires together up at the light housing to make it work?
I did not get deep into the colors of wires but that is the only thing I can see at this time.
Maybe reading the post and wire colors you can use the harness that is in place and just add the wires up top like it sound like the factory did?

I know you did not ask about the clock but here as a back ground only:
It has been a few years since I installed my clock but I dont remember a harness between the clock and the trucks main harness?
IIRC the clock plugged into a plug on the main harness.
But has the post pointed out there were 3 different plugs used between the years and the main harness needs to match the clock or the clock the main harness.

I still think there is a post in the main area about the under dash lights (and the map light) but like the clock I dont think there is a harness between the lights and the main harness. But could be wrong?
Being the above post is also taking about the buzzers for lights / key / seat belts I dont know if it is the dash lights or the buzzer(s)?

Hmm I'm still confused about some things but that'll probably clear up once i can get my hands on some of the wiring. I'll have to go look in my rig and go on from there

Clock wiring info here...
https://www.ford-trucks.com/g/album/804073

Photo of short extension harness needed for clock.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/g/picture/6002608

The short clock extension harness plugs in close to the ash tray, and is something you need to get at the junkyard when you get the clock. You can still wire it manually with the info in the first link, it just easier to have the short extension harness.
My truck had all the extra lights mentioned, the bed cargo light was a source of leaks, but only if it rained. I found a better gasket style on a newer truck that fixed the leaking problem.
Good luck, Jim

Light group harness

This is the female side of the harness that has the floor lights and glove box light. The clock should plug in here.

These are both male plugs. One from clock on right. One from harness with floor lights and glove box light.

This is the light group harness for 1985-86. The harness has a y in it, containg a male and female connector. The clock can be plugged into the harnesses without the floor light harness or the floor lights are plugged in then the clock to the floor light harness. Appropriate years plug and play. Behind the heater control/radio
