Hello, looking to move up to a 2024 F250 with a Diesel option - Or is the 7.3 a better option? . I'm Assuming they all come with the 10 speed (loved it in my 150 eco boost).
I want to make this a long term truck instead of my typical 4 year upgrades I've been doing.
Currently towing a bumper pull RV at about 8K max (if I can keep check on the pack rat wife )...
Is Max Tow package even a thing on an f250 or is it all pretty much standard.
Yes, all engine choices come with a 10spd similar in function/drive modes to the F150.
What does long term mean to you age and mileage wise? That would heavily influence the diesel or gas consideration. One costs significantly more up front, more for maintenance, and in higher mileage older age has significantly more potential costly failure points. Ive had more than a few and they all earned the name "PowerBroke" after about 6 years and 150k miles.
Are you planning to ever upgrade to a heavier trailer? If 8k is all you'll ever tow id say don't even consider the diesel.
A base f250 without any tow enhancements can more than handle 8k but if you're going to upgrade to something considerably heavier it wouldn't hurt to have the larger rear axle assembly and F350 spring pack but again the base truck can still max tow much more than the 8k you have now.
When we ordered our '23 XLT w/ Premium Pkg, I compared the cost between a 250 and 350. Once the High Capacity Axle/Trailer pkg (or whatever they are calling it now) was added to the 250, the 250 was actually $80 more expensive than the 350 with the same options. I am not prohibited/penalized from having a 350 where I live, so it was no brainer to get the 1-ton. I don't know what the '24 pricing is like, but that is something I would check.
Plus, with getting the diesel, your payload capacity will be limited on the 250. The 350 opens that up a lot more.
Great advice guys.... The 7.3 would probably work for great for me for a next truck. Is that engine reliable.
I have the 6.2 now and while my mechanic says it's bullet proof I don't like the way I have to be in to the high RPM's on hills to develop the power. I live in the valley so it's up in every direction
Current truck was a quick buy because it was needed and is a lower end XLT package. Not a lot I miss in the option area except for the electric seats. I'm tall and like to sit lower than the manual seats allow. I guess I could look into the possibility of having them installed ?
Opinions on the current 6.2L ? My mechanic likes them. Nothing really wrong with the current truck I guess......
Just spit ballin' here guys, thanks for helping me make a decision.
Based upon your trailer size an F250 is more than enough by a wide margin. Now if you are going to upgrade to something over 15K I would go to an F350. Some folks say you need 4.30s if you are towing, well not for what you are towing. Any of the engines that are available, 6.8, 7.3, and 6.7 will all handle what you have easily. As to the gas or diesel you have to decide what is important to you in terms of pro and cons. For me it was efficiency, I did not like 13 around town and 9 towing for gas vs my diesel at 17-18 around town and 13 towing. BTW I have a 7K TT and have put on 7000 miles on my 23 towing it and it is like it is not there vs a struggle at times with my 2015 F150 3.5 EB. Just in case some folks argue what about the cost of DEF, I am averaging $0.01 per mile cost of DEF over 16000 miles so this is not a big cost driver.
