I'm trying to insert a parking/turn signal bulb into the front of my 1966 F100. I cannot seem to push it in hard enough to turn the nubs into the slots. I'm afraid if I push it any harder, it's going to break in my fingers. Is there some kind of tool to make this task easier, safer?
Do you have the correct bulb? Some bayonet style bulbs have the "nubs" at the same depth where as others have differing depths on the base.
Also, have you inspected socket? Is it free from debris? Are the wires free to move (as some sockets can be cantankerous if the spring loaded wire can't move)?
Looking at the bulb, is the solder tip contact abnormal? Have you tried another bulb from the package?
Make sure the locking pins on the base of the bulb are in the same orientation between old and new bulbs. Some are straight across and others are off-set. (Just another way of saying what bmoran4 said in his first line)
The same bulb fits I the drivers side, but I can't seem to push it in far enough on the passenger side. The bulb from the drivers side has the same problem on the passenger side. It has offset pins and they are oriented correctly. Socket is clean.
I will check to see if the wires are able to move when pressing on the contacts; that might be the issue as there's some pretty tight heat shrinking on the back of the socket.

The socket may be clean, but here you answered your own question. If the bulbs work on one side but not the other, it's not a bulb issue and no tool will help that. You'll need to investigate why the socket isn't working like it should.

The base contact plate inside the bucket sounds like it may have something under it or is obstructed by the heat shrink tubing.
Yep. Turns out the shrink tubing on the back of the socket was inhibiting travel of the contacts. When I removed that, problem solved. Taped it back up.
Thanks everyone.
Glad you got it figured out, I was just joking around. The info given applies whether it a 49 truck or 89 truck. Feel free to ask general question here anytime, great bunch of folks with very vast knowledge.
