Good evening! I hope everyone is enjoying the last week of June! We are suffering through a cold front in SW Oklahoma today...high was only supposed to be 98! I am working through an issue with the pickup that may be the subject of a different post, but long and short I am chasing a misfire. My pickup (1994 F150, 5.0, 105k miles on the clock) has Motorcraft plug wires, cap and rotor. If the cap and rotor are original, I would be surprised. I pulled the cap off today, and it looks awfully good for that kind of miles. The plug wires have me curious though, and I may need to just post a picture. They are Motorcraft wires, numbered, none of the looms or clips are broken, and they have "1994" printed on them. Could these really be the original wires on the pickup? I know at some point in the life of the pickup the heads have been off of it (Fel Pro headgaskets...) and it had a water pump very poorly replaced at some point as well. Other than that, history before I got it is up in the air. Also of note, pulled a spark plug, and they are definitely due for replacement, both for wear and the fact that they are ACDelco!
Yes. They could be the original wires. Let us know how it runs after the tune up. I would also replace the fuel filter if you don’t know when or how many miles since that was done.

I changed the fuel filter when I got the truck last year and put it on the road. It had been sitting for an unknown amount of time which was measured in years. If the plug wires are the originals, I figure there is no reason to go to Ford and try to get them warrantied! I am actually surprised that they are still functioning. A couple of them have some rodent gnaws, but I guess none of them are bad enough to cause a failure! I still cannot believe that someone put Delco plugs in the pickup. Don't get me wrong, I have put plenty of Delco plugs in GM vehicles, in fact the particular plug that is in the pickup is the same plug I kept on hand and ran in my old square body Silverado. I guess I am a snobby purist when it comes to things like spark plugs. I did get sticker shock when I checked with O'reillys though...6.29 apiece for Motorcraft copper plugs! The locally owned parts store 2 blocks down had them for about $22 for the set, so going with that option.
The plug I pulled

I suppose that would depend on how deep the bites are into the wires? Missing insulation could be causing the spark to jump to another wire. There was a service bulletin about routing good wires away from each other to prevent that problem. Same here. I run Motorcraft copper plugs in my trucks. You probably already know that the plug to use is listed on the emissions sticker under the hood. That plug has seen better days.
