Direct Air Intake

I have a 2002 Ford F-350 Diesel Power Stroke with direct air intake. Will cold air (30' or so) effect the fuel mileage? I have notriced during the day with the air temp in the fifties the truck was getting 16 miles per gallon, but during the night it began to drop quickly.

Are you basing your mpg on the trip computer? It doesn't sound logical for cold intake air to negatively impact mpg. Cold air is denser, so it should actually improve mpg and performance. Is it possible that the computer is using a sensor that is being fooled by colder air? Are all other driving conditions similar when comparing warm/cold intake air, for example: truck is totally warmed up, driving on flat ground at the same speed, etc.
Not having a trip computer, I'm just throwing out ideas.

I put a Cold air K&N on my 2000 PSD, It also has a airaid throttle body spacer. By the trip computer my Milage is only slightly better. I commute alot so I have time to stare at it alot more than most. If I pay attention to how much fuel and how many trips to work I could make before and after I installed the Filter I'm getting way better milage. The distance per tank computer is out of whack too, says I only have like 50km left but have over 1/8th a tank left by the guage... I can usually do 150 km on 1/8th
I have yet to document it by hand, if I keep it in mind I'll do that over the next month and see what it says.
