Question brake lights dont work

my 64' f-250 has lighting problems. when you turn on the lights the brake lights come on, but you hit the brakes and they don't brighten. also when I have the lights on only the right blinker works. does any one know the problem or have a diagram. the wiring has been messed with before(p.o.), so i dont know whats original and whats not. It had other problems before but i got them worked out but this one is stumping me.

Brake lights

I had a very similar problem with my '61. Believe it or not, the problem was solved with a new turn signal switch. My truck was stripped when I bought it & the wiring was a nightmare. It's harder to put together something that you didn't take apart. I narrowed down the problem by tweeking on the switch & discovered that different position had effects on brake lights, tail lights etc... GOOD LUCK, Truckrod

You'll want to isolate each turn signal to narrow it down. Also need to clean each connector, after 40 years or so they get all corroded and high resistance. Make sure the turn signal backing plate is making good ground contact, bulb sockets are cleaned, etc. WD40 will work if you don't have "real" electrical contact cleaner.
