I rebuilt the tailgate latch mechanism with a new handle and clips from LMC, worked well until a "helpful assistant" slammed the gate, and the lower clip and rod fell off. As with others, I couldn't re-use the clip, bought Dorman linkage assortment and used the 3/16" linkage - I like that it secures both sides of the retaining rod. I also secured the clip to the rod with zip ties - I'm hoping this provides more security. Works well now, will report back if another "helper" slams the gate before I can tell them to always open the latch and be gentle. I've struggled with this poor design before, as have many others form past threads, so I'm sharing this in hope it works better. I also found it helps immensely to wedge the outer latches open to give more play in the latch rod
