Help Needed. Easy question if you know.

Hello,
I'm in the process of rebuilding my rear differential on my 98 F150. It's 4x4 and naturally has the 8.8 rear end. This is my first time doing so.

I just pressed the carrier bearings on and realized there was something I don't know for sure....
When pressing on the bearings I noticed that the bearing doesn't sit flush against the carrier face IF the outside of the center of the bearing is flush with the outside edge of the housing shaft. That probably didn't make any sense, so i've attached pictures. Basically the section with the dashed line is flush with the section that is all black. Dashed line is inside outer edge of bearing, solid black is outside edge of carrier shaft; however, this leaves a gap (as illustrated with the screwdriver tip) between the bearing face and the carrier face.

THE QUESTION:

Do I press the bearing all the way down until the bearing face is flush with the carrier face? Thereby removing the gap.

Or do I leave it as it is? Thereby leaving the gap.

I'm assuming I press it all the way down because there is a chance the bearing would get seated during use, which would cause play in the shims on either side of the carrier.

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated, BUT please don't answer if you are not sure.

Thanks in advance!

-Ben

Thank you. I assumed so, but just wanted to make sure. I REALLY don't want to have to try to rebuild this thing twice. lol
