In the process of installing one of Aerotank's highboy specific fuel tanks under the bed of my '76. I had them prep the tank for EFI for my turbo build, which involved them adding an opening and providing an in-tank fuel pump "cartridge" with pump connections, outlet, and return lines. While attempting to install the tank today, I got the rear mount tabs on the frame, but the front was stopped solid 1.5" away from the frame. I found that all the lines and wires for the EFI kit are shoved up against one of the longitudinal bed spars, preventing it from going up any higher. With where the flange is for the pump, indexing the cartridge to one of the other 6 positions would notfix the problem, since it's almost directly centered under the spar.
I have an email out to aerotanks about it, but I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this problem with their tank? I feel like I've heard about a lot of these being installed over the years and haven't heard of a problem like this. Honestly it looks like the main body of the tank might not even clear if the pump wasn't there, but hard to tell.
Thanks!
you will need to shim the tank. Not as good a fit as you would expect for the money! Just like all builds nothing is easy, if it was we all would be driving home build perfect rides.

Hm, I'm seeing similar comments elsewhere. For as long as Aerotanks has been selling these (and like you mentioned, how much they charge), I'd have thought this would have come up. I'm going to wait until I hear back from them directly, because sometimes mistakes happen and maybe something is in the wrong spot.
But your photos did answer another question that I had which was if others had their brackets hitting some of the rivets on the frame. Much more minor problem, but still glad to know it's not just me being dumb lol
Well, I did let Jake know about the issue where they put the fuel gauge hole. I drilled my own EFI fuel pump hole so I missed the brace. I believe he set this tank up from someone that used a half assed bed swap. If you don’t take the time to do it like the factory and change a couple of the braces they fit differently. Yea, yea they work and I know you did it and bla, bla, bla . Don’t really want to hear it! This is what happens when you cut a corner and then somebody takes your work for original. As I can see they are still cranking them out with issues. The good side is at least they get them 90% of the way and that gives us an option that wasn’t there before. After you get it sorted out it will be one of the best mods you do. If you wait on Jake to tell you how to fix it you will be an old man.
I did end up getting in contact with Jake at Aerotanks via email. He said he hadn't seen or heard of this issue before, we're going to talk on Monday about options (other than cutting the bed).

That is funny stuff. Typical response from a company. Oh, never heard of that before. You must be the first, send me some pictures. Hmmm, I don’t know I have sold a lot of these with no problems. Must be on your end, good luck! lol Told me the same sh$t. Again make it work be happy he got you 90% there. You will get nothing from him! NOTHING!
Man don't cut your Bed,,,,,I have had my aero tank at least 5 years,,,,,,Buck was the first I know to have one probably 15 years ago now,,,,,,a few people removed the ears and re welded the position they needed,,,,,,,,,its hit or miss with aero, but your not the first,,,,,, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post12733647
After you get through the mounting hassle you will love the darn tank. I would do it again if I build another just maybe have him send me the brackets separate and weld them on myself or not. Again, at least they make something for our trucks to get you started.
I'm hoping he's willing to do a refund of some kind, won't know more until next week. Fat fender garage now makes a Highboy tank, I put an email out to them asking if they've seen any issues when using their efi kit. If I could get a RMA and refund from Aero, I'd be willing to try out the FFG one.
I'm going to hold off any judgment until I can talk to the guy. He was nice enough to respond to my emails today even though his shop is closed, and he got back to me quickly.
