Question 54 LD 3-Speed Input Bearing replacement

I just finished the restoration of a 1954 F100 (239 y-block – standard 3sp LD transmission)

After 50 miles of service, the front bearing is making a rubbing noise when the truck is in gear and when the truck is out of gear and clutch is fully released. I believe the input shaft bearing is failing or has failed. Any ideas on possible other causes would be appreciated. If my diagnosis is correct, I want to know if I can replace the bearing without a complete teardown of the transmission? I can’t tell from the service manuals if the bearing can be accessed simply be removing the Front Retainer or will I have to go deeper to make the replacement.

I appreciate any feedback or guidance. Trying to avoid a trans rebuild.

Unfortunately you’re going to have to disassemble the transmission to get the input shaft out. The cluster gear can remain in the case, but you have to remove the cluster gear shaft to drop it down and away.

Thank you for the information. If I have to go that far, my plan would be to replace the input bearing, the output bearing, and the output bushing even though the two output ones aren't presenting any issues at this point.

I'd suspect the release bearing is rubbing lightly on the clutch fingers. Does the noise go away when the clutch is depressed?

Yes, the sound goes away completely when the clutch is fully depressed. The sound returns about 80% through the clutch release process, but the noise is there weather it’s in gear or out of gear.

The front bearing wouldn't be spinning when stationary, with the clutch depressed and the trans in (any) gear. The release bearing would be.
